Play Xbox & Steam Games on Meta Quest

Meta Quest 3 headset and controllers for Xbox and Steam

Your Meta Quest can do much more than play games from the Meta Horizon Store. You can stream Xbox games onto a huge virtual screen and play PC VR games from your Steam library wirelessly.

I’ve put both methods together on one page so you can see what you need, how to set everything up and what to check if it doesn’t work properly.

How to Play Xbox on Meta Quest

Stream Xbox games directly to your Meta Quest using Xbox Cloud Gaming. It’s a great way to play on a large virtual screen without needing a television.

What you need

Meta Quest headset

Xbox app from the Meta Horizon Store

Compatible gaming controller

Xbox Game Pass subscription for most cloud games

Fast, stable internet connection

A Game Pass subscription is required for most games. Supported free-to-play games such as Fortnite can be played with a free Microsoft account.

Meta currently supports Quest 2, Quest Pro, Quest 3 and Quest 3S for Xbox Cloud Gaming. The Xbox app also supports compatible controllers and lets you resize and reposition the gaming screen.

01

Install the Xbox app

Download and install the Xbox app from the Meta Horizon Store on your Quest.

MY ADVICE:

For the best experience, use a strong Wi-Fi connection and stay reasonably close to your router. If controller latency becomes noticeable, a compatible Xbox controller can also be connected directly to the headset by USB-C.

Meta specifically recommends being close to the Wi-Fi router to improve network latency and says a wired USB-C controller connection can reduce input latency.

02

Connect your controller

Pair a compatible gaming controller with your Meta Quest. The Xbox Wireless Controller is a good option.

How to Play Steam on Meta Quest

Play PC VR games from your Steam library wirelessly on Meta Quest using Steam Link. Your gaming PC does the hard work while the game is streamed to your headset.

What you need

Gaming PC capable of running the VR game

Steam and SteamVR installed on your PC

Steam Link installed on your Meta Quest

5GHz Wi-Fi 5 or better

PC connected to your router by Ethernet

Valve currently lists a PC running Steam and SteamVR, Windows 10 or newer, a capable GPU, 5GHz Wi-Fi 5 and a wired connection between the PC and router among its Steam Link VR requirements.

01

Install Steam Link

Install the Steam Link app on your Meta Quest.

MY ADVICE:

For the most stable connection and best picture quality, connect your PC to your router using Ethernet and keep your Quest on a strong 5GHz Wi-Fi connection.

Close downloads, streaming apps or anything else using lots of network bandwidth before you start playing.

Valve recommends a wired PC-to-router connection and 5GHz Wi-Fi for the headset.

02

Prepare your PC

Open Steam on your gaming PC and make sure SteamVR is installed and ready.

Controller not working

Check your Wi-Fi connection, move closer to your router and close anything else that may be using a lot of bandwidth.

For Steam Link, use 5GHz Wi-Fi and connect your PC directly to your router with Ethernet. Also make sure your PC is powerful enough to run the VR game comfortably.

Make sure your Quest and gaming PC are connected to the same home network. Check that Steam is running and restart Steam Link if necessary.

For Xbox, check that your controller is properly paired with the headset. If the Xbox app still isn’t detecting it, check the Quest gamepad settings.

Meta notes that if Xbox controller inputs are not detected, the Use the gaze cursor gamepad setting should be turned off.
